Amid the conclusion of the Oakland teachers' strike, a high-profile board member was caught on video choking and harassing a teacher during a protest.

Yahoo Lifestyle reports Oakland school board member Jumoke Hinton-Hodge was attempting to enter La Escuelita Elementary School when she was caught grabbing the neck of Markham Elementary School teacher Darnisha Wright.

On Friday, many protesters and striking teachers reportedly blocked the entrance as board members tried to enter to attend a planned budget meeting. Daphne Crane, Wright's colleague, took out her phone and recorded as the two clashed.

The victim told local news outlet East Bay Times she sustained injuries during last week's transgression against her.

“My neck and throat hurt, and my head is pounding," Wright said. "I may have gone to the hospital if I didn’t have a [more than] 100-page tentative agreement to read, understand and vote on within 24 hours. The vote won’t wait for me to get better.”

Wright said she was taken aback when Hinton-Hodge kept her hand on her for an elongated period. It would take nearly a day for the board member to apologize. According to the East Bay Times, Hinton-Hodge published an apology on a private Facebook page that was republished on the Times' site.

“I care deeply about Oakland children, their families and the teachers that nurture them in our schools. And I value our communities long struggle for more just and fair public school systems…” wrote Hinton-Hodge.

"I would never have intentionally touched another person (or a sister) in that way. And I regret any harm that I might have caused her … In view of the entire incident, I remain deeply concerned about the threat to me and my colleagues as public servants. I am a deep believer and practitioner of nonviolent protest. What happened yesterday was not that. It was terrifying, unacceptable, and has no place in our civil discourse, especially on a day when we should be celebrating an agreement that will end a strike and offer our teachers something closer to what they deserve.”

According to Vox, the teachers' strike came to an end on Monday after district officials agreed to give nearly 2,000 teachers an 11 percent pay raise over four years and a 3 percent bonus. Teachers wanted smaller classes sizes in addition to a better, livable wage. In the deal, support staff such as school counselors, psychologists and special education teachers will be hired. Additionally, nurses will get raises.

However, class size will only decrease by two students in the next few years. Students stayed home for a week while negotiations were being drawn out.

Where the controversial protest is concerned, some believe Hinton-Hodge's actions were justified. Oakland Unified School District Vice President Jody London told Yahoo she was trying to enter the building on crutches. If the director did not ward off the wave of protesters, she might have been injured.

“You also may be aware that the meeting we were supposed to have Friday afternoon to approve the budget reductions we need to make to support the raise did not occur,” London told Yahoo. “After the deal was announced the protesters started calling for folks to block the superintendent and other board members from getting into the meeting. That is what Director Hinton Hodge encountered.”
