The White House announced today that President Obama has named Crystal Nix-Hines to a State Department position as representative to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). 

In essence, she’ll be a US Ambassador, assuming the Senate confirms her.

I mention this news not only because Nix-Hines is a black woman (photo left), but she has some Hollywood credits on her resume, which I wasn’t aware of. She wrote for, as well as produced TV series like Alias, Commander in Chief and The Practice. 

But Nix-Hines is also an LA-based attorney at the law firm of Quinn Emanuel, where she specializes in entertainment and intellectual property law. 

Hines, who also wrote for The New York Times, decided to instead pursue television writing in Hollywood after law school, which would eventually lead to the above-mentioned TV writing and producing credits, and also serving as executive story editor.

She was Michelle Obama’s classmate at Princeton and graduated from Harvard Law School in 1990, a year before Barack Obama.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t find many photos of her, and the few available are tiny – hence the pic on the top-left.

An interesting piece of news I thought was worth sharing…

Set up in 1945, UNESCO was created to build networks among nations through equity in education, intercultural understanding, protection of heritage and support for cultural diversity, pursuing scientific cooperation, and protecting freedom of expression, all to strengthen ties between nations.
