This official synopsis below was revealed by Lionsgate in preparation for the AFM (American Film Market) which starts tomorrow, November 2.
A man kidnapped and imprisoned on his daughter’s birthday is held captive for fifteen years. Upon his release he embarks on an obsessive mission to find the reason for his imprisonment and soon finds out that his kidnapper has plans for him more tortuous than solitary confinement.
Ok. Broad. But, thus far, it sounds just like the synop for Park Chan-wook’s 2003 film. Also reads similar to the plot for the original manga both films (Spike Lee’s & Chan-wook’s) are based on; the main difference being that, in the manga, our protag is held captive for 10 years, not 15.
As we already know, Josh Brolin will star in Spike’s version.
And I’m not sure if we’ve mentioned this before… Mark Protosevich is penning the screenplay adaptation; his past credits include this year’s Thor movie (though he was one of 4 writers), Will Smith’s I Am Legend (he co-wrote that with Akiva Goldsman), and The Cell (he was solo on this one).
Production is scheduled to begin in March of 2012, meaning a late 2012 or early 2013 release is likely.
