Vox contributor and self-proclaimed Black conservative Shermichael Singleton was quick to snub claims that Republican leaders never disrespected former President Barack Obama, just his policies they disagreed with.

During an appearance on Chris Matthews' MSNBC program Tuesday, Singleton and a panel of guests debated the House Democrats' motion to denounce President Donald Trump's inflammatory "go back" remarks he aimed toward four freshman congresswomen last week. Matthews directed viewers to watch Congressman Steve Scalise assert opponents never chastised 44 and that they "respectfully" voiced concerns about his policies. That elicited a vigorous reaction from Singleton.

"Oh, hell no!" the pundit said in response to the clip. "They're not clean, Chris. Excuse my language. This really angers me. I'm a conservative, but there was a huge sense of pride for me to see Barack Obama get elected."

Singleton then shared an anecdote where he spearheaded a bus campaign while he was in high school to allow fellow Black men to witness the former POTUS speak live shortly after his historic win in 2008. 

"It was just amazing for me as a young Black kid to say, 'Oh my God, look at this Black guy. He is the president,'" Singleton said. "So, you have Republicans sitting there saying they never … They disrespected President Obama every step of the way. You don't have to like the policies, but why in the hell do you have to disrespect the man merely because of how he looked?"


Like clockwork, Matthews then aired footage of Republicans launching hate-filled remarks toward the nation's first Black commander-in-chief. Representative Joe Wilson famously shouted "You lie!" during a State of the Union address, Congressman Mark Meadows crassly declared in a speech it was "time to send Mr. Obama back to Kenya or wherever he's from" and former Representative Doug Lamborn said in a 2011 interview that he didn't even want to be associated with Obama because it was like "touching a tar baby and you're stuck and you're part of the problem now."
