As we eagerly wait to see Omar Sy in his first post-Intouchables film, the actor/comedian continues to stack up new projects – both Hollywood and outside Hollywood.
Sy has signed up to star in an action-thriller from Stephen Gaghan (Traffic, Syriana), which he’ll direct from a script he co-wrote with Shannon Burke.
Titled The Candy Store, Lionsgate has already picked up North America distribution rights, with the film heading to the upcoming Cannes film market where it’ll be shopped for international distributors.
Omar Sy will be joined by Jason Clarke, who’ll be starring in the film as well.
So what’s it about? According to The Hollywood Reporter:
The Candy Store interweaves several storylines set against a dynamic criminal underworld in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn. A former covert operative (Clarke) discovers the organization he was dedicated to fighting is now operating in his new backyard. When he teams up with a disgraced local cop, their investigation leads them to a king pimp (Sy), a Cold War consigliere and a beautiful woman wrapped up in an elaborate threat against Manhattan.
So… let’s just call him King Pimp Sy! Put that on a tee-shirt. It kind of sounds like it could be a rapper’s name.
But all kidding aside, Sy is in very good company here, with both Clarke (a well-respected, lauded actor), and Gaghan (his resume, comprised of heady drama/thrillers, speaks for itself). Let’s see who else is cast in this.
Up next for Sy: Michel Gondry’s Mood Indigo, X-men: Days Of Future Past, co-starring with Bradley Cooper in a culinary dramedy titled Chef, and a French-Language film titled Chocolat, which is a biopic of Rafael Padilla – a former Cuban-born slave, who became the first black artist in France during the Belle Epoque era.
