Standing under that domed, twinkled out sky at Joshua Tree a few months ago, we saw the performance of a lifetime by Childish Gambino. He's come so far from conscious rappity-rap to understanding the blavity of his talent that his music has become transformative. "Me and Your Mama" is only the beginning from a record that, if it stays close to what he performed, could be a watershed moment in music for the rest of the decade.
Listening to this, you can't help but ask yourself, "What is this?" It soars like Kamasi Washington's last output, zags like K.Dot's TPAB and Solange's A Seat At The Table. It's lightyears away from anything he's ever done. More honest and less intrusive than "3005." Almost unrecognizable from anything he did on Camp. Awaken, My Love! is about to open an entirely new lane in black music.
We might just be seeing an artist enter the prime of his creativity. And damn, don't we need it now more than ever. Go ahead and pre-order this blessing here.
