Update (October 8, 2019):  In a series of tweets on Monday, Morehouse College announced that Oprah Winfrey was donating another $13 million through the Oprah Winfrey Scholarship Fund.

Winfrey was at Morehouse on Monday celebrating the 30th anniversary of the program, which has allowed more than 600 students to attend the college for free. 

“I was really surprised to learn that it’s been 30 years since I made that $12 million donation to Morehouse, so today I would like to add $13 million to that,” she said. 

Morehouse also said they were unveiling a portrait of her on Monday.

Winfrey's donation also comes on the heels of another donation she made last week. She gave the United Negro College Fund $1 million on September 30.

Morehouse students are on a roll with billionaires in recent months.

The billionaire media mogul has donated about $25 million to the school through the endowed scholarship she created in 1989. During the first year, she made a donation of $1 million, kicking off the Oprah Winfrey Endowed Scholarship Fund. 

Winfrey said she started the fund because of the college's mission to develop leaders.

“I felt that the very first time I came here,” Winfrey said. “The money was an offering to support that in these young men. I understand that African American men are an endangered species. They are so misunderstood. They are so marginalized."

Her contribution to the school has made her a top donor. 

Robert Smith also announced that he would be paying off all the student loan debt for the entire 2019 class. He even agreed to pay off any student loan debt incurred by parents or guardians.

Original: Oprah Winfrey is continuing on her philanthropic trajectory.

The former talk show host, who now runs the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN), performed her latest act of kindness with a $1 million donation to the United Negro College Fund (UNCF).

According to The Charlotte Observer, Winfrey made the surprise announcement at the annual Maya Angelou Women Who Lead Luncheon in Charlotte.

Video from the event shows the crowd erupting with joy after Winfrey made the pledge. The 65-year-old's donation matched the $1 million that was raised during the luncheon, bringing the total to more than $2 million. 

The UNCF supports historically Black colleges and universities by providing scholarships and advocating for minority education. 

“I am honored because Maya Angelou used to come all the time,” Winfrey told WBTV. “And so in her name — I get to speak on behalf of HBCU’s everywhere.”

UNCF President Dr. Henry Lomax told WBTV that Winfrey is inspiring the community.

“This is everyone’s issue and we can all make a difference,” Lomax said. “And Oprah Winfrey empowers us and she is going to empower these students and we are very blessed to have that happen.”

According to The Charlotte Observer, the luncheon honors women who make a difference in the community and lead as Maya Angelou did when she lived as a poet and a civil rights activist.   

The donation comes months after billionaire Robert Smith declared he'd be paying off the entire student loan debt for Morehouse College's 2019 graduating class. 

Winfrey has long been known for her philanthropic efforts in the U.S. and around the world, including South Africa where she built the Leadership Academy for Girls in 2007.

Winfrey is now in the midst a healthy campaign tour called “Oprah’s 2020 Vision: Your Life in Focus," which will give her a chance to travel to various cities and promote healthy living.
