P-Valley creator and executive producer Katori Hall has won a Pulitzer Prize for Drama due to her Off-Broadway play, The Hot Wing King.

According to Deadline, The Hot Wing King is set in Memphis, Tennessee and focuses on a Black gay male couple and their cooking group, The New Wing Order, preparing to enter in the annual Hot Wang Festival. But when one of the main characters, Dawayne, decides to take in his delinquent nephew, trouble looms for Dwayne in more ways than one.

The Pulitzer board has called the play “a funny, deeply felt consideration of Black masculinity and how it is perceived filtered through the experiences of a loving gay couple and their extended family as they prepare for a culinary competition.”

P-Valley, which airs on STARZ and based on Hall’s play Pussy Valley, was the breakout hit of 2020, with Shadow And Act’s Trey Mangum calling it “one of the year’s best series ” and “one of the best new series to hit television in years.” The series also earned the elusive 100 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The series got an early Season 2 renewal at STARZ. The show’s success also led to Hall signing an overall deal with the network. Under the deal, Hall and STARZ will also create a fund to help Black playwrights who have been hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic.

“In this unprecedented moment, Black playwrights are particularly struggling–so much so that I fear some will leave the artform forever,” she said in December 2020. “This would undoubtedly be a major loss. Without theater, there would be no me. In fact, there would be no P-Valley. That’s why I’ve partnered with Lionsgate on this initiative to help ensure that American Theater is more inclusive and diverse when the curtain rises again.”
