Pastor Jewel Lee, who leads The Light Church of Clayton in North Carolina, has gone viral on TikTok, after preaching against men having long hair. In a clip of the sermon, Lee is shown explaining to his congregation that men having long hair — long enough to brush off their face or tie into a bun — contradicts their gender and the Bible.

“How you a man and you tying your hair up in a bun,” Lee said in the now viral clip. “Men don’t walk around with buns on their head!”

He goes on to explain that the Bible says having long hair is “a shame for a man,” and when the crowd reacted with a mixed response, he noted they were part of the “problem.”

“That’s the problem, we’re so easily offended,” said the pastor.

Lee continued on his diatribe, motioning brushing hair away from his face and flipping his hair back and forth with disdain. In the clip, you hear the pastor mumble “you’s a devil” while reenacting the behavior of men with long hair — a trait he appears to attribute to musicians.

“That ain’t God, that’s worldliness,” he says of men with long hair. “Men don’t do stuff like that.”

Viewers on social media were not pleased with the pastor’s comments. Many questioned what’s become of Black churches.

“I feel like there are more important things to preach about,” one user said.

“Lord this ur servant,” another added with a face palm emoji.

“Yep. This is what happens when people take verses of the Bible and remove the context,” one viewer noted.

Others mentioned that Jesus himself had long hair.

“So according to him, Jesus wasn’t a man? Every conceivable image of Jesus, he has ridiculously long hair.” A viewer tweeted.

“Black Jesus ain’t never wanna pull his hair up from ‘round his face tho…?” Another user wrote.

And one viewer argued that Lee’s sermon says more about himself than it does men with long hair.

“This message is beyond ludicrous,” they wrote.  “It sounds like he has identity problem with oneself. Samson had long hair was told by God not to cut and if he did he would loose his power. He has no right to call someone a devil for having long hair. Some of these preachers smh.”

Lee isn’t the only pastor to speak out against men with long hair. Controversial pastor Gino Jennings of First Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ in Philadelphia, has also made similar statements in his sermons in which he references 1 Corinthians 11:14, saying, “If you’re a man and got long hair, you’ve got to surrender that long hair. For God says, ‘Doth not nature teach you that if a man have long hair, it is a shame under Him. God said it.'”

Jennings continued, “Don’t argue with me, take it up with God.”

Lee, nor his church, have addressed the backlash that has ensued due to the clip.
