The Escambia County Sheriff's Office Facebook page became riddled with jests on Tuesday after posting a mugshot of a man with abnormal neck girth.

Charles Dion McDowell, 31, was recently arrested for fleeing police and possession of meth, cocaine, marijuana and drug equipment. The image that accompanied the caption functioned for informational purposes. However, his enlarged neck soon became a source of humor among the online community.

While the photo incited a few laughs, one doctor pointed out McDowell could be suffering from a grave condition, and its symptoms should not warrant laughter.

It's called pterygium colli deformity. Or webbed neck.

It's associated with various medical disorders, most commonly Turner Syndrome.

So I guess the MSM is cool with body shaming, so long as it's the result of a medical condition?https://t.co/RHs4ToJa0g #FoxNews @FoxNews

According to the National Institute of Health, pterygium colli (“webbed neck”) is caused by a "bilateral cervical skin fold stretching from the mastoid to the acromion."

Pterygium colli is also associated with Noonan syndrome, a genetic disorder that causes the individual to develop unusual facial characteristics, with a large neck being one of them. Additionally, Klippel-Feil syndrome, a rare bone disorder a child might develop at birth, causes a short neck and, in some cases, a manifestation similar to pterygium colli, according to the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.
