You can now add the title of theater director to the very long list of credits for actress Phylicia Rashad. The prestigious Goodman Theatre in Chicago announced yesterday that Ms. Rashad will direct a new production of the new play Immediate Family which will run at the Goodman from June 2 – July 8th.
The play, written by Chicago playwright, actor and White House advance associate Paul Oakley Stovall, is set in Chicago's South Side Hyde Park neighborhood (home of the University of Chicago and President Obama), and deals with one family's traumatic family reunion in which all sorts of secrets and mysteries are finally revelaled.
Interestingly, one of the actors with a major role in this new production is actress Cynda Williams, in case any of you out there has been wondering whatever happened to her after Mo' Better Blues and One False Move.
This however is not Ms. Rashad's first attempt at directing a play. She previously directed, in 2007, a production of August Wiison's play Gem of the Ocean for the Seatlle Repertory Theatre.
