President Obama will make his first-ever presidential visit to an American mosque on Wednesday. He’s scheduled to meet community members of the Islamic Society of Baltimore for a roundtable discussion.
A White House official said in an email Saturday, the purpose of the President’s visit is “to celebrate the contributions Muslim Americans make to our nation and reaffirm the importance of religious freedom to our way of life.”
In 2010, The President toured the Istiqlal Mosque in Jakarta.
The President also visited the National Mosque of Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in 2014, but has not toured a mosque on American soil during his presidency.
Following the December 2015 attacks in San Bernardino, CA, President Obama made an appeal to enlist Muslim communities as American allies noting “Muslim Americans are our friends and our neighbors.”
