Here's a new entry into the continuing discussion on the Black and Latino experience.

NEGRITA, a forthcoming documentary from director/producer Magdalena Albizu, will look deeper into the experience of Afro Latinas in the United States. Consider this akin to the Black and Latino mini-doc that emerged back in January. But unlike that 10-minute piece, this project looks to be a feature-length doc with a scholarly focus on women.

The summary:

"NEGRITA will expose the dynamics of being 'Black,' the current tone of race relations between African-Americans and Hispanics in the United States, and how the Latino perception of being ‘Black’ affects Afro Latinas in the country, regardless of culture and nationality.

Why are Afro Latinas encouraged to 'marry lighter' in order to adelantar la raza (advance the race)? Why do Latinos tend to define and favor their Spanish and Indigenous heritage and often choose to identify as anything but Black?"

The production team includes producer Ingrid Matias, director of photography Donavan Lambert, and videograper Eddie Bailey.
