Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were involved in a “near catastrophic car chase” involving paparazzi in New York Tuesday night, his spokesperson said.

The incident occurred after the couple had attended the Women of Vision Awards at the city’s Ziegfeld Ballroom, where Meghan was honored for her work, CNN reported.

Photos of Harry, Meghan, and her mother, Doria Ragland, have since gone viral on social media. Reuters reported they were riding in a taxi when the car chase happened.

“Last night, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex and Ms. Ragland were involved in a near catastrophic car chase at the hands of a ring of highly aggressive paparazzi,” a spokesperson for the couple said in a statement obtained by CNN.

“This relentless pursuit, lasting over two hours, resulted in multiple near collisions involving other drivers on the road, pedestrians and two NYPD officers.”

The statement addressed how paparazzi can go to extreme lengths to capture images of public figures in a “dangerous” manner.

“Dissemination of these images, given the ways in which they were obtained, encourages a highly intrusive practice that is dangerous to all in involved.”

The royal couple stepped down from their roles in 2020 and moved to the United States.

As Blavity reported, actor and producer Tyler Perry announced he was the godfather to Harry and Meghan’s daughter, Lilibet.

Perry shared the news in a Netflix series about the couple and detailed his relationship with them.

The 53-year-old said he was taken aback after the couple asked him to take on the prestigious role.

“I had to take a minute to take that in, and I thought I’d be honored, absolutely be honored,” Perry admitted.
