A mother in Queens is mourning the sudden death of her 16-year-old son who passed away during his high school varsity basketball practice.

The New York Daily News reports Lenny Pierre was at practice at John Bowne High School on Wednesday afternoon when he suddenly fainted. Pierre went into cardiac arrest and was immediately rushed to the hospital where he could not be revived.

"He said while he was playing, they saw him a little shaky," Pierre's mother, Edna George, said to NBC News 4 on Wednesday. "They told him have a seat. He said he was lightheaded. Just moments later, he collapsed."

The high school junior had no prior health concerns and wasn't on any medication.

"Healthy as you can imagine," George lamented.

A representative from the Department of Education told ABC 7 that a probe into the young man's death is ongoing, and the medical examiner will determine a cause for his death.

Pierre's mother grieved her first-born son, praising him for being a kind teen who never got into any trouble.

"Great guy. Very sweet," George said to ABC News 7. "He listens. Doesn't give you any trouble for a teenager. I had a good one. Had. God."

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said in a statement that he was "heartbroken" to learn of Pierre's passing.

"As a parent, and as a father of student athletes, I can only imagine the pain and sorrow being felt by Lenny's family, loved ones and classmates," Mayor de Blasio's statement read. "On behalf of 8.6 million New Yorkers, I extend our deepest condolences. We will be with this family now and in the future as we mourn the loss of one of our city's children."

The team's next scheduled game is on January 3. There is no word if that game will be rescheduled, per ABC News 7.
