Randall Wallace has been tapped to develop Sony's TD Jakes faith-based family drama Heaven Is for Real. Wallace's development deal could lead to his directing the adaptation of the best-selling non-fiction book Heaven is For Real: A Little Boy's Astounding Story of His Trip To Heaven And Back, from a script by Christopher Parker.
Written by Todd Burpo and Lynn Vincent, the book has sold over 4.5 million copies; it chronicles the story of Burpo's now 12-year-old son Colton, who nearly died during an emergency appendectomy operation when he was 4.
Joe Roth is producing through his Roth Films compnay, along with T.D. Jakes, who just produced Sparkle for the studio. Devon Franklin will oversee the project for Sony. Recall he was just named Senior Vice President of Production for Columbia Pictures, with his duties including finding, developing and supervising production of commercial material geared towards the urban and faith-based markets.
So Heaven Is For Real falls under that unbrella.
