Regarding her relationships, Raven-Symoné has been pretty tight-lipped throughout her multi-decade career.
But in a recent podcast interview with Howie Mandel, the Disney Channel star opened up about how she navigated her personal life while in the spotlight.
During her Howie Mandel Does Stuff podcast appearance, the 37-year-old explained she learned to protect herself at a young age while navigating fame as a child star.
“I was taught that those people don’t love you; they love your work,” she said, adding, “Most people that will come up to you don’t really love you; they just want something from you.”
The actor explained those trust issues created a “block” between her and the people in her life.
“That wall, if not nurtured properly, can turn into — kinda what it did for me — anger,” Raven said.
The reality of fame and trust issues regarding others shaped how she approached relationships. For example, amid talking about how she met her wife, Miranda Pearman-Maday, she revealed she used to ask her dates to sign a non-disclosure agreement.
“All of my relationships, especially, obviously, when I started dating, I had to get people to sign NDAs,” she told Mandel.
But the request wasn’t easy for Raven to make, even though she knew that’s what she had to do to protect herself.
“It took me a while to wrap my head around it because it’s just very impersonal, but someone in our position needs to do that,” she added.
Mandel then asked how she would ask her partners to sign the document.
“At what point in the date or the relationship do you say, ‘I have some paperwork for you?'” Mandel inquired.
“Before the naughty times come,” Raven replied with a chuckle.
Raven-Symoné stars on The Disney Channel’s That’s So Raven spinoff, Raven’s Home, which sees its titular character raise teenagers, one of whom is also a psychic.
