I'd say this has been 2012's most polarizing black film thus far.

Laaawwwd… it seems like such a long time ago, but I vaguely recall the numerous posts, each with scores of comments, debating the merits of the film from all angles; and of course, there was the ongoing marketing push which sought to appeal to the hearts (and wallets) of black audiences by impressing on us the immense significance of the film's existence – George Lucas funding it with his own loot, and the "if it fails, black film fails" meme; say… what happened there?

The film wasn't what I'd call a box office failure, but it certainly underperformed, grossing just over $49 million on a near-$100 million budget (including P&A costs). Even if you didn't include P&A costs, it still underperformed. 

And for those who didn't see it at the theater, or who saw it and would like to own it on DVD/Blu-ray/Digital Download…

Lucasfilm Ltd. and Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment have released the Anthony Hemingway-directed, George Lucas-produced Red Tails on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital Download today, just in time for the Memorial Day holiday!

As you'd expect, the disc is loaded with special features, including the documentary Double Victory: The Tuskegee Airmen at War, along with profiles of the filmmakers and behind-the-scenes featurettes with George Lucas, Anthony Hemingway, Terence Blanchard, and the entire cast; plus dissecting all that "Movie Magic" with THX.
