Originally slated to open on August 10, 2012, the release date for Sony Pictures' Sparkle remake, which stars Jordin Sparks, Whitney Houston, Carmen Ejogo, Tika Sumpter, Derek Luke, and Mike Epps, shepherded by Salim and Mara Brock Akil, (with original music composed by R. Kelly), has been pushed back a week to August 17th, 2012 instead.
No particular reasons given (nothing I could immediately find anyway); maybe they figure that weekend gives the film a better chance to thrive. It'll be going up against Expendables 2 and the animated flick ParaNorman. It's also worth noting that 2 weekends before its opening weekend, August 3rd, 2012, 2 big-budget studio action films will be released (The Bourne Legacy, with Jeremy Renner taking over for Matt Damon, and the Total Recall remake with Colin Farrell); so pushing Sparkle's opening to 2 weeks after those 2 films open, instead of just a week, could be a wise move.
Who knows…?
The film, which will feature original music from R. Kelly, will hit theaters on August 10, 2012.
Principal photography is supposed to have wrapped already, so I suspect we'll get a first trailer for the film soon enough.
In the above phot, Jordin Sparks plays the titular Sparkle (Irene Cara in the original); Whitney Houston is the sisters' mother which was played by Mary Alice in the original.
