Brenda Edwards, the wife of newly-deceased singer Dennis Edwards, is being investigated by Chicago Police for alleged maltreatment against her Grammy award-winning husband.
A report was filed on Jan. 8 stating Edwards was abused by his wife earlier in December, according to CBS Chicago.
Reports reveal his wife attempted to suffocate him by holding his head facedown on a bed. A petition, filed for the order of protection, stated she would take his hearing aids from him.
According to the Chicago Tribune, the order of protection initiated against Brenda Edwards took effect Jan. 18, and stopped her from having contact with her husband.
However, after his passing, the order was repealed.
In a statement, Brenda Edwards denied all claims:
“I loved Dennis and we were married for 18 years. I would have never done anything to harm him. These allegations are false and defamatory and will be proven as such. Until this is all over, I have no further comment.”
Dennis Edwards, 74, passed away just one week ago; the cause of his death was meningitis.
The couple lived in St. Louis, Missouri, for nearly 30 years, and recently moved to Chicago to seek better medical treatment. At the moment, officials are unaware if the abuse claims are connected to his death, and are awaiting autopsy reports from the Cook County Medical Examiner.
A “Celebration of Life” ceremony will be held for the late singer: Sunday, February 11, 3 p.m. at Faith Miracle Temple, 870 Pershall Road, in St. Louis.
Rest in Power, Dennis Edwards.
