Since Rihanna stepped on the scene in 2005, we've seen her slay red carpets, dominate the charts and live her life unapologetically on her own terms. But make no mistake about it, the global superstar offers far more than just celebrity antics. In 2012, as founder of the Clara Lionel Foundation Rihanna embarked on a mission to improve education, health, arts and culture in communities around the world. Through her foundation, the singer has made a number of significant humanitarian contributions including awarding scholarships to students from Barbados, Cuba, Haiti and other countries to attend college in the U.S.

In September of 2016, Ms, Fenty expanded her humanitarian efforts as Global Ambassador for the Global Partnership for Education (GPE). In this capacity, Ms. Fenty recently spent a week in Malawi where half of the population lives below the poverty line and the average income is around 90 cents a day. While there, she visited schools, interacted with students and met with teachers and government officials in an effort to understand the issues and challenges surrounding education. “It’s one thing to read statistics, but I want to see it firsthand and find out all that can be done and where to start first,” she said.

Traveling along with former Australian Prime Minister and GPE Chairperson Julia Gillard and Global Citizen CEO Hugh Evans, Rihanna visited the Muzu Primary School just outside the capital of Malawi. The trio also spent time at the Lilongwe Girls Secondary School, where they sat in on math and biology classes, and watched a student debate on arranged marriage.
