I’ll be scrubbing through the list for titles to highlight in individual posts, but in the meantime, check out the full list of films selected for Premiere Brazil 2013 below. 

Première Brazil is an initiative by the Rio de Janeiro International Film Festival whose goal is bring to the international market, a sample of the best in Brazilian cinema.

Besides promoting Brazilian cinema, Première Brazil also has the broader goal of raising awareness for Brazilian culture in general. Traditionally, the project, which is a traveling festival, is developed in partnership with cultural institutions in each locality where the screenings takes place. In New York where I live, for example, the event takes place in association with MoMA – Museum of Modern Art.

It’s an annual festival we’ve covered the last 2 years, and will certainly do the same this year as well. It’s always a film enthusiast’s treat, and recommended. I wish I could see more of the films each year, but there’s never enough time in the day to do so.

Without further ado, here’s this year’s line-up. As I noted earlier, expect individual highlight posts of Diaspora films, once we’ve had a chance to scrub the list. Few titles immediately stand out to me, like Cidade De Deus – 10 Anos Depois (City Of God – 10 Years Later), and I’m sure there are others.

Première Brazil films in competition compete for the Redentor trophy. Eleven awards are presented by the official festival jury: best fiction feature film, best feature documentary, best short film, best director, best actor, best actress, best supporting actress, best supporting actor, best screenplay, best photography and best editing.

As well as receiving official jury awards, the films are also eligible for public awards in the categories of best fiction feature film, best feature documentary and best short film by popular vote.
