Robert F. Smith, the founder, owner and CEO of Vista Equity partners is the second richest black person according Forbes (behind Oprah). His hard work focusing on tech mergers and acquisitions gave him early success in a very important time in the industry. It allowed him to open up his own shop, investing even more in the future of software and technology.
Smith’s domination in these fields has turned his eye to using his position and understanding to become a leader in two other areas of personal passion – music and philanthropy. He has been elected as the newest chairman of Carnegie Hall, of which he will be the very first black person appointed.
As a member of the board since 2013, much of the focus that Smith has tasked his fellow contemporaries with is granting, “access and exposure to the best music in the world,” to those who otherwise may not have the opportunity.
In an interview with the New York Times, he said, “When I look at the folks that inspired me growing up, people like Frederick Douglass, they had to stand up and take positions in public in order to make a difference. Part of the responsibility I have, because of the opportunities I’ve been granted, is to take leadership positions and help expand access for others.”
