Rosalind Brewer has been named as the Group President and Chief Operating Officer of the Starbucks Corporation, according to the Starbucks Newsroom.
When her appointment goes into full effect on October 2nd, Brewer will be the first woman and first African American to hold such a high post with the company.
Holding the COO position puts Brewer just one step below president and CEO, Kevin Johnson, The Seattle Times reports.
Johnson has praised Brewer for her accomplishments, and is excited about the contributions she'll be making as COO.
“Starbucks is a culture-first company focused on performance, and Roz is a world class operator and executive who embodies the values of Starbucks. She has been a trusted strategic counselor to me ever since she joined our board of directors, and I deeply value her insight, business acumen and leadership expertise. Roz is the right leader to help us realize our greatest of ambitions in this next chapter of our journey,” Johnson said.
He continued, “I am honored that Roz is joining Starbucks in this capacity and playing an important role with an accomplished team of senior leaders that reflects the strength and diversity of our organization.”
Brewer has a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Spelman College. She also attended an advanced management program at The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, and has served as a senior leader with Sam's Club, in addition to executive positions with Walmart and Kimberly-Clark. All told, she has 33 years of business experience.
So, what will Brewer's role entail?
According to the press release, Brewer will remain on the Starbucks board of directors and will lead the company's operating businesses across Canada, U.S. and Latin America.
In addition, Brewer will spearhead product innovation, store development organizations and global functions of the supply chain.
“As a passionate customer of the brand and recently elected board member, I have a deep love and admiration for the Starbucks brand and its people," Brewer said.
"I am so honored to have the pleasure of working with the Starbucks leadership team to realize our highest of aspirations for the company and I look forward to working closely with the astute and talented leaders across the enterprise," she added.
Not only will she have a high ranking role, but according to a regulatory filing, Brewer will earn an annual base salary of $1 million, and will receive both a signing bonus of $1 million and an equity award of $7 million.
With the last name Brewer, it was almost as if she was destined for this!
Congratulations are in order!
