Ryan Coogler’s multiple Sundance Film Festival award winner, Fruitvale, will now be titled Fruitvale Station.

The Weinstein Company (TWC) acquired distribution rights to the film which is based on the 2009 murder of 22-year old Oscar Grant (played by Jordan), and which co-stars Tristan Wilds and Melonie Diaz, with Forest Whitaker producing.

Expected to be one of TWC’s Oscar contenders this fall (it’ll be released on July 26), the name change has likely been done to make the title much more specific, tying it to the exact station location where the murder took place. Instant recognition, I suppose.

Fruitvale is one of at least 3 black films TWC will be releasing later this year, the other 2 being The Butler and Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom

Zeba Blay reviewed Fruitvale for S&A after screening it at Sundance; Read that review HERE.

No trailer yet, although we’ve shared a few clips.
