A San Antonio police officer has been fired after shooting a teenager who was eating a burger in his car, parked in front of a McDonald’s, as reported by HuffPost. Bodycam footage shows the officer, James Brennand, calling for assistance as he walks toward the car in the parking lot.

“I have a vehicle over here that fled from me the other day,” Brennand said as he called for backup.

He then opened the car door and told the 17-year-old driver, Erik Cantu, to step out. The teen immediately closed his door and rushed out of the parking lot as the officer unloaded shots at the vehicle.

In the car was also a 17-year-old female passenger who has not been identified.

According to KSAT-TV, Cantu suffered multiple gunshot wounds.

According to mySA, SAPD Chief William McManus said Cantu stopped down the street after driving off and was taken to the University Hospital in critical condition, where he was last reported to be in surgery.

The unnamed female passenger was not injured.

Brennand, a probationary police officer, was serving on the force for only seven months before he was fired after Sunday’s shooting, mySA reports.

According to the outlet, Brennand alleged that the 17-year-old struck him with his vehicle. Yet, bodycam footage proves Brennand’s claim to be false.

According to HuffPost, Cantu has been charged with evading detention and assault on a police officer.

According to KSAT-TV, the investigation into this shooting can take as long as a year.
