Last year, 2,000 bodies represented at the first Charleston Women's March. According to the Charleston City Paper, the second event has a date! The second march is set for Jan. 20, 2018. The founder of the march, Tamika "Mika" Gadsden confirmed that this year will be a bit different and be deemed a rally instead of a march in order to accommodate participants with various physical abilities.

"This rally will be a call to action," said Gadsden. "I'm very intentional about who is invited to participate. I want to share their insights and push us forward as women. I want a voice from the trans community present, a voice from black political leadership, a voice from black student groups. Voices for the marginalized community."

The upcoming rally will be held in honor of Charleston native and educator, Septima Clark, who is referred to as the "queen mother" of the civil rights movement.

Gadsden, who is the manager of the Charleston Activist Network, and state leader for the South Carolina chapter of the Women's March, is looking forward to more Charleston residents taking a step beyond showing up to the rally. Next year, the rally's theme will be "electoral justice," which came from Gadsden's learnings about the inner-workings of local and federal government.

"This is why we’re here, this is what the year has brought us," noted Gadsden. "We can show up in numbers, but 2018 is the time to act, to think about mobilizing folks, to get women to the polls. To hold our elected officials accountable."

Of course, Gadsden spoke to the "There's a need for intersectionality," Gadsden said. "I'm familiar with Charleston and its history and the beautiful parts and also how the painful past has informed the present."

The location of the second Charleston Women's March is unknown at this time, but Gadsden is currently seeking volunteers and applying for permits. For more information and further updates, please follow the rally's Facebook page and head to the official website!
