Coming to theaters April 18, Warner Bros’ new thriller Transcendence explores what sci-fi buffs everywhere have feared: the Singularity. That is, the moment when artificial intelligence surpasses human intelligence to create a kind of super computer, which may or may not lead to the downfall of humanity.
Johnny Depp stars as Dr. Will Caster, an artificial intelligence researcher who creates a sentient machine that “combines the collective intelligence of everything ever known with the full range of human emotions,” a process he calls “transcendence.”
When anti-technology activists inadvertently make Caster a participant in his own transcendence, and his brain is connected to his invention, his quest for power as a super computer turns deadly.
Morgan Freeman co-stars as Joseph Tagger, part of a team sent out to mitigate the damage, along with a cast that includes Rebecca Hall, Paul Bettany, and Kate Mara.
The film is produced by Broderick Johnson’s Alcon Entertainment (Joyful Noise, The Blind Side).
