I am a smooth 5-foot-even when barefoot. This means, when it comes to fashion, life can get pretty reckless. Although I’m able to navigate pretty well around the uniform wardrobe basics, sometimes I want to roll with the big dogs on that trendy new-newness. I like knee boots, I like maxi dresses. I want to feel grown and stylish.

My vertically-challenged struggle means that more than half of my clothing purchases require a 10 percent minimum markup for alterations. The bottoms that fit over my thighs rarely accommodate my waist, the length of my pants always needs to be hemmed, and we won’t even get started on the customized foolishness required for business attire. On the rare occasion that I find a good fit off the rack, you can catch me in the dressing room on full choreographed praise break.

It gets real out here. Imagine my delight during a recent spring outlet shopping spree, when I discovered several brands have upped their petite and sexy game. Yes! You heard right tiny divas — we’re talking super affordable crop tops, the latest trends in jeans, all-purpose dresses, high-waisted shorts and activewear that gives and hugs and flows in all the right places. Here’s a list of seven personally-tested, tried and true brands that are giving alteration-free life in these petite thickum streets!

1. Express

This is the spot for cute quality dresses that fit!  Short sundresses, cocktail dresses, lounge-y t-shirt dresses…they have it all.

2. Forever21

This is the go-to for graphic tees, tanks and cute flowy tops. They also design a mean romper if you’re about that floral-print-onesie life. I’m here for it!

3. Loft

For your classic pieces and professional wear, Loft will get you right with tops, conservative skirts and blazers.

4. American Eagle

This is the sanctuary for all things denim. As far as I’m concerned, AE is the official sponsor for that #Afropunk acid wash, stone wash, ripped jean life.

5. White House Black Market

If you’re down to dabble on the pricier end of the spectrum, you can’t beat this petite couture experience. From formal to business to churchy, BH/WM is the go-to for your timeless investment pieces.

6. H&M

We all know Hennes & Mauritz is taking no losses when it comes to affordable runway-like fashions, but they are here for the shorties too.

7. Target

Bathing suits, basics and accessories all day! Target is the final stop for some finishing mix-and-match pieces.

No matter the size, the universal key to customizing your look is blending all elements into your own personal style. Shout out to all the brands looking out for the petite curvy girls. We out here!
