Update (August 3, 2021): Simone Biles finished her 2020 Tokyo Olympics run on Tuesday and, as expected, she did not disappoint. After choosing to focus on her mental health, the 24-year-old gymnast returned to the competition and won the bronze medal in the balance beam individual final, ESPN reported.

The gymnast scored a 14.000, falling behind China’s competitors, Chenchen Guan who scored a 14.633 and Xijing Tang who scored 14.233.

Biles said she didn’t anticipate that she’d place in the top three during the competition.

"I was just trying to hit one more beam set. To have one more opportunity to compete at the Olympics meant the world to me,” Biles said.

The win marked her seventh Olympic medal. 

It's also the second time Biles earned a bronze medal in the balance beam competition at the Olympics. In 2016, during the Rio de Janeiro games, Biles was awarded bronze after she almost slipped off the beam during her routine, The Associated Press reported.

This victory comes more than a week after the gymnast withdrew from the team final after experiencing the “twisties,” as Blavity previously reported. 

She said it wasn’t an easy decision to withdraw from the finals, but the four-time Olympic gold medalist said she’s happy she did it.

"People just thought it was easy, but I physically and mentally was not in the right headspace, and I didn't want to jeopardize my health and my safety because at the end of the day, it's not worth it,” Biles said.

"My mental and physical health is above all medals that I could ever win," she continued. "So to be clear, to do beam, which I didn't think I was going to be, just meant the world to be back out there. And I wasn't expecting to walk away with the medal. I was just going out there doing this for me."

With this latest win, Biles has tied with gymnast Shannon Miller for being awarded the most Olympic medals in gymnastics.

Original (August 2, 2021): Four-time Olympic Gold Medalist Simone Biles is all set and ready to return to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics competition floor this week. 

The 24-year-old gymnast is slated to compete in the balance beam final on Tuesday, The Associated Press reported. 

Monday morning, the USA Gymnastics confirmed Biles return in a tweet and said “we are so excited to confirm that you will see two U.S. athletes in the balance beam final tomorrow – Suni Lee AND Simone Biles!! Can’t wait to watch you both!”

Biles’ return comes a little more than week after she withdrew from the Olympic individual all-around competition due to “the twisties," as Blavity previously reported. 

Last week, the gymnast said she wanted to focus on her mental health as she battled with the issue of air awareness and not having the confidence to know what to do with her body while in the air. During the all-around competition, Biles had issues sticking her landing and thought it was best to stand on the sidelines and support her teammates. 

In a series of Instagram stories, Biles explained to her followers what “the twisties” were, NBC News reported.

“Literally can not tell up from down. It’s the craziest feeling ever. Not having an inch of control over your body,” Biles said.

She continued, “I don't think you realize how dangerous this is on hard/competition surface. Nor do I have to explain why I put health first. Physical health is mental health.”

Although the gymnastics star faced backlash for her decision to withdraw, many others — celebrities and fellow Olympians included — rallied behind her. 

Every day following Biles’ withdrawal, she has continued to train and has undergone evaluation by the USA Gymnastics staff and has been cleared to participate in Tuesday’s competition.
