Three of Southern University A&M College‘s Human Jukebox marching band members were killed Tuesday evening, not far from campus.

Tyan Williams, 19, Dylan Young, 21 and Broderick Moore, 19, stopped in Natchitoches, Louisiana, to replace the tire when Gay slammed into the jeep.

Louisiana State Police issued a statement explaining a tractor-trailer driven by Clyde Gay, 62, who sustained no injuries, drifted into the shoulder of I-49, hitting a Jeep the three students were fixing a flat tire on.

“The initial investigation revealed that a 1999 Jeep Laredo was stalled on the northbound shoulder of I-49. The occupants of the Jeep were attempting to change a flat tire on the vehicle. For reasons still under investigation, a northbound 1997 Freightliner, driven by 62-year-old Clyde Gay of Coushatta, drifted onto the northbound shoulder, struck the left side of the Jeep, and impacted all three pedestrians,” the statement reads.

“Williams, Young, and Moore sustained fatal injuries and were pronounced dead on the scene. Gay, who was restrained, sustained no injuries. Routine toxicology tests are pending. The crash remains under investigation,” the statement reads.

Kedric Taylor, Human Jukebox’s Director of Bands, said he is “at a loss for words and utterly devastated” to lose his students, who he deemed “some of the most promising, humble and talented musicians I’ve had the pleasure of instructing.”

The tragedy has united HBCUs as they send their condolences online and support Southern University through an unsudden tragedy.

“It is with a heavy heart that I share the news of the tragic deaths of three of our students who reportedly succumbed to injuries in a vehicular accident on Tuesday evening in Natchitoches Parish,” Southern University said in a statement.

“Our thoughts are with their families, friends, classmates, and other loved ones. All three young men were members of the Southern University Human Jukebox Marching Band, to which we also extend our condolences.”

Police have submitted Gay’s toxicology test and are still pending results. It was not immediately clear if any criminal charges would be brought as a result of the deadly accident.
