House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is expected to announce she backs a formal impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump, according to NBC News. The announcement on Tuesday came following alleged whistleblower concerns of a call between President Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Reports claim Trump pressured Zelensky to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden's son, Hunter, by withholding millions of dollars of foreign aid.

Democrats have been adamant for Pelosi to move forward with an impeachment inquiry for months but she has, to this point, remained reluctant. Earlier this month, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez called on the party leadership to act on impeachment even if they lack the support of Republican senators who would be needed to complete the process. 

"If they want to fail it, then I want to see every Republican go on the record and knowingly vote against impeachment of this president, knowing his corruption, having it on the record so that they can have that stain on their careers for the rest of their lives, because this is outrageous to protect the amount of lawlessness and corruption coming out of this presidency," Ocasio-Cortez said.

A formal announcement is expected to take place at 5 p.m. EST at a news conference held by Pelosi. Sources have spoken on the matter under the condition of anonymity and Pelosi's office has refused to comment on the matter officially.

“As soon as we have the facts, we’re ready. Now that we have the facts, we’re ready,” Pelosi said Tuesday at a forum hosted by The Atlantic and reported by Washington Post. “For later today.”

President Trump, disputing reports of his wrong doing, has announced he intends to release the transcript of the call with Zelensky by Wednesday.

"You will see it was a very friendly and totally appropriate call," Trump said.

An Impeachment inquiry would only investigate the actions, formal articles of impeachment would still need to be filed in order to force a vote on removing the President.
