A double shot of Sophie Okonedo today (following my post just below this one that she’ll be starring in a BBC political thriller miniseries alongside Adrian Lester)…

The revered actress is now officially set to star in a revival of "The Crucible" on Broadway next year – Arthur Miller’s play that centers on the Salem with trials in Massachusetts in the 1600s.

To be directed by Ivo van Hove – a Belgian theater director best known for his avant garde experimental theater productions – and set up at the Walter Kerr Theatre, "The Crucible" is set for a spring 2016 Broadway run.

The production, which will feature an original score by composer Philip Glass, also announced that it has finalized its cast. In addition to Okonedo, who will play Elizabeth Proctor (accused of witchcraft in the Salem Witch Trials and wife of John Proctor), her fellow black Brit, Jenny Jules, will play Tituba (a slave who was owned by Reverend Parris, and who was one of the first to be accused of practicing witchcraft during the Salem witch trials in 1692). 

Meanwhile Ben Whishaw will play John Proctor; Saoirse Ronan will be Abigail Williams; and Ciaran Hinds will be Deputy Governor Danforth.

Rehearsals will begin in January 2016 with a first preview currently scheduled for February 29 at the Walter Kerr. It will officially open April 7 and continue through July 17. 

Tickets go on sale September 12.

"The Crucible" debuted on Broadway in January 1953, winning the Tony for Best Play. The most recent revival, directed by Richard Eyre in 2002, co-starred Laura Linney and Liam Neeson.

Okonedo’s last appearance on Broadway won her a Tony Award – her role in last year’s revival of "A Raisin in the Sun."

The busy actress is currently shooting the upcoming BBC 6-part thriller "Uncovered" from Peter Moffat, playing "England’s top prosecutor" in a new drama that has been written specially for her. The series will see Okonedo’s character, just beginning her new job, uncovers some disturbing secrets about her husband’s past that turns their happy home (with children) upside down, and potentially worse. Adrian Lester co-stars, playing her husband. 

The actress will also soon be seen playing Queen Margaret in the BBC trilogy of films, "The Hollow Crown" – Queen Margaret being the queen who curses co-star Benedict Cumberbatch’s Richard III.

Drawn from Shakespeare’s "Henry VI" trilogy and "Richard III," "The Hollow Crown" is set for a 2016 premiere.
