Straight Outta Compton actor Jason Mitchell has made it clear that he condemns Roseanne Barr's racist tweet which resulted in the cancellation of her ABC show. On Monday, June 25, the actor explained on Twitter that he wasn't fully aware of Barr's tweet when he defended her in an interview.

During a red carpet interview at the BET Awards on Sunday, June 24, Entertainment Tonight's Nischelle Turner informed Mitchell about news ofRoseanne spinoff that's slated to air without Barr on ABC this fall. Mitchell appeared taken aback by the news that Barr had been kicked off the show.

"Wow, I think it's tough that society has come to a place where we can't even take a joke anymore, you know what I mean?" he said. "I grew up on Roseanne, I don't see no wrong on Roseanne." He added, "She's a comedian, if we can't take a joke then, you know what I mean…"

When Turner suggested that Mitchell will likely get pushback for defending Barr, (which he did) the Mudbound actor responded by saying he hopes everyone can "all get along."

"…I want us to all get along… I think we should all be able to coexist," he said. "And in the meantime, I'll be able to joke about it, because it's funny."

Mitchell did not appear to explicitly discuss the details of Barr's racist tweet during the red carpet interview, according to the video published by Entertainment Tonight. In a tweet posted in May, Barr compared Valarie Jarrett, former President Barack Obama's former top aide, to "planet of the apes" in an Islamophobic and racist tweet. ABC responded by cancelling the Roseanne sitcom reboot.

The Straight Outta Compton star said he was not aware of what Barr wrote in the tweet and that what she wrote was "nothing funny."

"Regarding Roseanne, I’ll admit I really wasn't familiar with the tweet the interviewer was referring to when she asked me it," he wrote.  "After reading it, it's clear that what Roseanne said was wrong — even if she was joking, there is nothing funny.."

Mitchell added he was glad the rest of the Roseanne cast were able to maintain their jobs despite Barr's "offensive tweet."

"PS. Don’t let the internet let you all forget who I am.. playas f**k up," he wrote.

Barr has since expressed remorse for her tweet though she has insisted she wasn't aware Jarrett is black. She has also claimed her tweet was about anti-Semitism and blamed being on Ambien for her words.
