Black-ish writers threw a big surprise into this week’s episode — turns out the Johnsons are…pregnant!?!
In an episode all about moms being the unsung superheroes of the real world, everyone in the family gets sick except for Dre. The last thing Dre wants is to catch the flu from his kids — so much so that he takes to spraying bleach water wherever he walks. But when he sees that Bow has caught something herself, Dre steps up his parenting game to nurse the kids, Ruby and Rainbow back to health.
It’s when Bow’s nausea continues after everyone else is feeling better that she realizes she didn’t have the flu after all. Cue the heart-warming pregnancy announcement! There might have even been a few tears shed.
But this pregnancy has left me with so many questions. For instance:
Financial problems?
The Johnsons have financial problems that were left up in the air during the season two “Keeping Up with the Johnsons” episode. Dre has yet to stop spending thousands of dollars on sneakers while he faces potential unemployment. Plus, Zoey is about to go to off to college — and seeing how smart she is, it’ll likely be an expensive one. All of which makes me wonder, how exactly are they paying for a fifth child?
Age
Bow herself jokingly asks whether she’s too old to be pregnant. But her age is not a joke. Although Bow isn’t that old, she is 40, and women over 35 have a greater chance of having a high-risk pregnancy. Will the show address the risks associated with 40+ pregnancies?
Living space
Where is this baby about to go? They’ve got Ruby living in their guest room. Pops is living in the guest house and Diane and Jack already share a bedroom. Maybe they’ll kick one (or both) of them out…?
Black-ish has brought the black family sitcom back to the forefront, demonstrating once again that creating content for black consumers is both engaging and profitable. You almost feel as if the Johnsons are an extension of your own family. Whether or not these questions are addressed, I’m excited to see what adventures the Johnsons will have with the new addition to their family!
