The death of a Jackson State University (JSU) student has launched an investigation with the help of JSU’s campus police and the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation homicide.

According to WLBT, the homicide happened around 8 a.m. Friday morning where the body of JSU student Flynn Brown, 22, was found dead in a Dodge Challenger with a gunshot wound in a parking lot on campus.

Brown came to JSU from New Jersey to play football.

Bailey Martin from the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation identified Brown’s killer as 20-year-old Randall Smith, WJTV reports. During his court appearance, he was assigned a public defender and. was denied bond.

 

JSU President Thomas K. Hudson released a statement of grief for Brown and acknowledged counselors would be on campus offering support to students affected by the case.

“It is with a heavy heart that I confirm the death of a JSU student. The loss of a young person is always a devastating circumstance for our campus community. Our thoughts are with the family during this difficult time,” the statement read.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation also released a statement citing they were working alongside police to investigate the murder.

“The Mississippi Bureau Investigation and Jackson State University Police are working together to investigate the recent homicide on JSU campus. At this time, there is no further threat to those on campus. MBI is currently assessing this critical incident and gathering evidence. Upon completing their investigation, agents will share their findings with the local District Attorney’s Office. This is an open and ongoing investigation; no further comment will be made by MBI at this time.”

Before playing at JSU, Brown played football in New Jersey at Mount Olive High School. His former High school coach, Brian O’Connor, announced the tragic news on Twitter.

“It is with a heavy heart that I am sad to say the Mt. Olive community and football family have lost one of their own. Flynn Brown, was killed yesterday morning while attending Jackson St. More info to come when I have. Thoughts and prayers to the Brown family,” O’Connor tweeted.

The Dodge Challenger was seen being towed by enforcement after sharing Brown’s cause of death.
