A young Chicago woman recently lost her life due to domestic violence. Her boyfriend shot the woman identified as 25-year-old Jasmine Marie Johnson after a heated argument that turned fatal.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported the couple was sitting in their vehicle when things escalated. Twenty-seven-year-old Derell D. Sikes got out of the vehicle and fired multiple shots at Johnson outside of her home on the 7800 block of South Bennett. He continued shooting until she crashed into a parked car before then walking away and turning the gun on himself.

He was pronounced dead on the scene, and Johnson later died at the University of Chicago Medical Center.

Journalist Jamal Andress sat down with the slain woman's cousin, hip-hop artist and activist Jessica Disu, also known as FM Supreme, to discuss the loss. He shared a clip of the discussion on Twitter.

"You can not talk about violence against anybody until [you] talk about violence against women and girls," Disu said.

"You can not talk about violence against anybody until talk about violence against women and girls."

Johnson's death is one of the countless incidents of young women being killed by their current or former partners. Seventeen-year-old LaShonda Childs was shot two months ago by her ex-boyfriend after attempting to break up with him on numerous occasions.

Disu shared multiple tweets about her cousin, affectionately referred to by some as "Princess Jasmine," including updates about the funeral.

The activist shared with the Sun-Times that Johnson intended to break up with her boyfriend.

“She realized he wasn’t good for her," she said.

“People think if we have entry to education, if we achieve status, if we have resources, we’re somehow immune,” she continued. “But people who are willing to commit violence can be charming and loving, and we don’t see the side of them until it’s too late, and they step up their aggression.”

The funeral took place at Christ Community Church in South Holland. A GoFundMe campaign has been created to help cover funeral expenses.
