During the season finale of Lovecraft Country, when Diana asks her mother Hippolyta how she learned to draw, the Freeman matriarch replied, “an artist named Afua taught me.”

As it turns out, the scene was a subtle wink and homage to Afua Richardson, the Eisner Award-winning illustrator and comic book artist behind the Orinthia Blue cover art.

In fact, not only was Richardson was behind the artwork for Orinthia Blue, she was also the artist that did all of Diana’s work for the acclaimed HBO drama, including the Topsy and Bopsy drawings that appeared in the eighth episode, “Jig-A-bobo.”

Richardson was also the artist behind the imagery behind the covers for all five issues of the comic book Black Panther: World Of Wakanda.

In a tweet, Richardson expressed her elation in being mentioned in the Lovecraft Country season finale, noting how her father was denied art scholarships in the ’60s.

Raised in New York City, Richardson hails from a family of scientists and also lends her artistic talents to the Genius comic book series.
