Known as the largest festival for modern and contemporary art, Art Basel is a gathering of the world’s most talented artists with galleries sharing the work of over 4,000 international artists. Normally the first week of December, this year's experience will take over South Beach and Downtown Miami-Brickell from December 6–9 via gallery displays and exhibitions all across the city. Frequented by many celebrities and every industry’s “who’s who,” Art Basel is the go-to destination for connoisseurs of fine art.

Interesting to note, however, is the acceleration of the changing tide that has been screaming, “REPRESENTATION MATTERS” for years. Beyoncé and Jay-Z struck a chord for many when their summer-hit, "APES**T" took over airwaves and shocked the world with their display of Black love and power at the Louvre Museum. But this isn’t new.

Black artists, and Black females specifically, make up less than 4 percent of artists on display at museums and art institutions across the country (TILA Studios, 2018). Curators and thought leaders, like TILA Studios founder Tiffany Latrice, have been creating a space for Black artists in spaces like the New York Office of Cultural Affairs, Schomburg Center, Brooklyn Museum, Hammer Museum, the California African American Museum — and now, Art Basel. After visiting Art Basel one time and seeing the shift within her career trajectory, Tiffany Latrice made it her mission to create the same opportunity for other artists, knowing the financial barriers many artists have. After an extensive application process, 10 Georgia-based artists will have a fully accommodated five-day experience during Art Basel, provided by Mail Chimp. Through the work of TILA Studios, more Black female artists will now have an opportunity of access and equity, taking their rightful seat at the table.
