It’s a popular myth that black people don’t tan. But the truth of the matter is that many people do, and it actually has some great benefits attached to it. For those of us who have uneven skin tones, or are just lacking a nice glow; tanning can be a solution. Tanning can also replace the need for makeup as imperfections are less visible when your skin gets a natural bronze glow.

For those beauties looking for a beautiful glow this summer, here are a few ways you can get your shine on:

Chill out in the sun

Enjoy the breeze and the beautiful sun while also getting a nice tan. Though most of us do this anyway without even thinking about it, it’s important that we protect our skin when using this method. Too much exposure to the sun can cause skin cancer. So, be sure to always wear sunscreen, and try to limit that tanning time to no longer than an hour.

Visit the tanning salon

Some people just aren’t about that outdoor life and that’s perfectly fine. Visiting a tanning salon is a great alternative. When doing so, please be mindful of the salon’s equipment. It’s preferred that they use equipment that measures your pigment before tanning. The equipment will take the darkest color of your skin (the color on your forehead) and the lightest part of your skin (the skin below your wrist) and create the perfect complexion for you. It’s also super important that you use indoor tanning lotion and wear the UV goggles to protect your eyes. Don’t go overboard with this method, as it’s still not 100% safe for your skin.

Tan at home with lotions

Some of us would much rather just be in the comfort of our own home. There are plenty of tinted lotions that you can use for a quick and short-term tan. It will give you all the shimmer and complexion you heart desires without all the hassle.

Spray it on

If a UV light isn’t your cup of tea, spray tanning is a much healthier option. The spray method also gives the muscles on your body a more defined look. As long as you shave and exfoliate prior, you’ll likely come out with the perfect, even shade.

With whatever method you choose, be sure to always protect your skin and be vocal about what you want the end result to look like.
