PeopleTV’s latest edition of Couch Surfing featured Loretta Devine going back down memory lane of some of her most famous roles. Interestingly, she also revealed some funny backstory behind the death of her character of Grey’s Anatomy.

On Grey’s Anatomy, Devine played Adele Webber, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. It was around this time that Debbie Allen became a part of the show.

Devine’s on-screen husband, Dr. Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.), eventually became the love interest of Dr. Catherine Avery (Allen). After Adele’s death, Avery and Webber became one of the show’s mainstay relationships. Now, not only does Allen have an on-screen character, but she’s also one of the show’s main directors and an executive producer.

Devine joked about the odd coincidences that follow whenever she and Allen cross paths.

“I got an Emmy for this show for the best guest spot and they fired me right after that. They killed me with that damn Alzheimer’s.”

“When I was doing Dreamgirls, Debbie Allen came over, took over that, then I was gone. Then she came over there to Grey’s Anatomy, took over that, then I was gone,” she said. “I was at The Client List and they said Debbie Allen was coming in to direct. I got scared as hell.”

In reality, both Allen and Devine love each other; Devine said that Allen has directed her in many projects. “I love Debbie Allen, but the truth is the truth,” she said and laughed.
