A cyclone has devastated the southern region of Africa, killing more than 1,000. Cyclone Idai had already brought destruction to the heavily populated areas within Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Malawi when it hit South Africa's coastal province of KwaZulu-Natal.

After the day of devastation, Provincial Minister Nomusa Dube-Ncube says he thinks the region will survive.

“We would like to assure the general public that our disaster management teams are working around the clock to attend to all reported incidents. Where help is needed, it is already on its way or will be very soon. We are overwhelmed but our presence throughout KZN ensures that we will be able to assist everywhere we are called,” Dube-Ncube said in a statement.

The death toll in the province rose to 32, according to News24, and rains have shown no signs of slowing down. The SAWeatherService told TimesLive that rainfalls could get stronger in the days to come.

"Because of the ground being so saturated, any amount of rainfall could contribute to more flooding,” said forecaster Wayne Venter to Times Live .
