When we last reported on Confederate, the controversial alt-history drama from Game of Thrones series creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, it appeared that the series was dead after word came that the two would not have any more projects in development at HBO after signing a deal with Netflix. Many can breathe a sigh of relief now that HBO has officially confirmed that the show won’t go forward.

Wednesday, Casey Bloys, network president, confirmed to TVLine that Confederate has officially been axed.

The series, as stated by its official depiction, would have chronicled “the events leading to the Third American Civil War. The series takes place in an alternate timeline, where the southern states have successfully seceded from the Union, giving rise to a nation in which slavery remains legal and has evolved into a modern institution. The story follows a broad swath of characters on both sides of the Mason-Dixon Demilitarized Zone — freedom fighters, slave hunters, politicians, abolitionists, journalists, the executives of a slave-holding conglomerate and the families of people in their thrall.”

Immediately after its announcement three years ago, Confederate drew controversy for its premise of an America where slavery still exists. The campaign #NoConfederate, led by Rebecca Theodore-Vachon, April Reign, Lauren Warren, Shanelle Little and Jamie Broadnax, took the internet by storm.
