Black female college students set to begin fall internships in Washington, D.C. have the opportunity to alleviate a portion of the financial burden of living in one of the nation's most expensive cities thanks to a new scholarship created by an alumni of President Obama's administration.

Developed by former White House Social Secretary Deesha Dyer, the Black Girl 44 Scholarship will grant several $1,500 fellowships to Black women who pursue internships in the nation's capital. According to a press release sent to Blavity, Dyer received contribution and support from over 55 Black women who also served in 44's administration.

"We want to give back the same hope and opportunity that was afforded to us," Dyer said regarding the scholarship's purpose. "These women are actively leading the charge for change. It's important that we support them in their efforts work."

In order to qualify for this honor, candidates must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate institution or have graduated within the 2018-2019 academic year with a Bachelors degree. Internships in the fields of policy, community engagement, global relations and politics must also be confirmed before submitting your name for consideration.

The deadline to submit applications is July 31 and recipients will be notified in August. Awards will be distributed at a luncheon honoring beneficiaries on September 15 in Washington, D.C. More information as well as the online application can be found here.
