It’s been long hoped for by many, but it’s finally official that Marvel’s Iron Fist is not getting a third season. The series is the first from Marvel to be canceled by streaming service Netflix.

Netflix and Marvel released a joint statement thanking fans for their support and alluding that the Iron Fist character would probably show up in other Marvel series, just not in his own standalone.

“Everyone at Marvel Television and Netflix is proud of the series and grateful for all of the hard work from our incredible cast, crew and showrunners. We’re thankful to the fans who have watched these two seasons, and for the partnership we’ve shared on this series. While the series on Netflix has ended, the immortal Iron Fist will live on,” said both entities in a joint statement.

Finn Jones, who played the lead character, Danny Rand, also released a statement on Instagram:

“With every end is a new beginning,” he wrote. “I have an enormous amount of love and respect for everyone involved with the last two seasons of this show. Defending the greatest city in the world amongst the most talented and warmest people has been a privilege and a joy. Blessed to have taken this journey and grateful for the ongoing support.”

But will Iron Fist really live on? Even though there are fans out there who are petitioning Marvel to bring the show back, a large group of fans hated the series, especially the first season. Many viewers also wanted an Asian man to play the lead role to take the story out of its problematic past. In fact, one of the first season villains, Zhou Cheng, was played by actor/martial artist Lewis Tan, who auditioned for the lead role of Danny Rand.

While Iron Fist ultimately failed, the series opens Marvel up to putting the Daughters of the Dragon–Luke Cage‘s Misty Knight and Iron Fist character Colleen Wing–into their own show. Many viewers have tweeted about their desire to see a Daughters of the Dragon show already, so it’s not like Marvel would have to twist fans’ arms, unlike what the studio had to do with Iron Fist. Also, with Marvel bringing more women into its various franchises with Captain Marvel and Marvel Rising: Secret Warriors, it makes sense for Marvel to start investing in a Daughters of the Dragon TV pitch.

At the end of the day, though, Iron Fist, the MCU superhero hated most by fans and derided by other superheroes within the MCU, has overstayed his welcome. It’s not clear if he was ever welcome in the first place.
