ESPN reported that medical scans uncovered Wheeler’s girlfriend had suffered a fractured humerus and dislocated elbow. Further testing found that she had aspirated fluid in her chest and that she vomited large amounts of blood the day after the attack. The woman later reported that she experienced difficulty eating and other neck-related ailments.

Wheeler later released a statement on social media saying that "events happened over the weekend that transpired from a manic episode. I am deeply sorry for the pain and suffering that I have caused to [the woman] and her family. I apologize profusely for the turmoil that I have caused to my family, teammates, fans and those closest to me.”

He added, "It is time for me to walk away from football and get the help I need to never again pose a threat to another. I cannot express my sorrow or remorse enough. I am truly ashamed."

Wheeler, who has played in the league since 2017, was released by the Seattle Seahawks last week. The team said that it is “saddened by the details emerging against Chad Wheeler and strongly condemn this act of domestic violence. Our thoughts and support are with the victim.”

Seahawks officials also encouraged the 27-year-old to seek “the help he needs.”

A King County spokesperson confirmed that Wheeler has an upcoming hearing slated for Feb. 11, and his trial is scheduled on April 6, per ESPN.
