On the third day at the Blavity House, we woke up to yet another gift from a sponsor. Cocotique is a curated box made up of the ultimate beauty arsenal of hair and skin products, and they hooked us up. We had goodies from Black Radiance, Natasha Somalia, Dr. Miracle’s, OGX and a free digital subscription to Hype Hair.

The United We Brunch x Blavity event at the upscale Trivoli and Lee was a great way to connect with some inspiring women. Speaker Kim Roxie, creative director of Lamik Beauty, spoke on the importance of living on your own time and not feeling like everything needs to be planned out in life. We got our whole lives listening to her. To be honest, it was unexpected and refreshing; Lamik Beauty is about so much more than makeup.

Next was the convention center for actual Essence Fest activities. Lukogho (a fellow Blavity team member) and I attended the Black Women at Work Session at the Convention Center with Patrice Washington, Deborah Elam, Karla Martin, Monique Greenwood, Honorable LaDoris Dot Harris and Carla Harris. One of the main takeaways was to be resourceful and use your current job to finance your next dream. Lukogho even got her tweets up on the main screen.

Later on we discovered Frenchmen Street, New Orleans’ best kept local secret. The live music scene here is dope! We watched as Musical Expression performed a wide range of hits, including some brass-heavy covers of our favorite Bruno Mars and Beyoncé songs. You don’t get to see talent like that every day. We definitely wanted to hang out with them later on.
