UPDATE: All-American has received an additional three episodes for its second season after its record premiere viewership. This will bring the season’s episode count to 16, equal to the first season.

The fan-favorite football drama on The CW posted big gains for its Season 2 return. The show saw 926,000 viewers, which is an all-time high for the show in its first airing and is 35 percent over its series premiere in 2018.

In the coveted 18-49 demo, the show also tied its series best of 0.3, which it last posted in November 2018.

The rise can surely be attributed to the new-found audience the show found on Netflix over the summer. The series is back after having a breakout summer on Netflix. After just garnering middling ratings on The CW (which were not that far from most of the network’s programming), the network president said they were waiting to see how it performs on Netflix. It was the only series from the network that premiered during the fall that didn’t get renewed in the first batch. After its speedy Netflix premiere (due to the previous Netflix/WBTV deal), the show garnered tons of new fans and a cult following.

Inspired by the life of NFL player Spencer Paysinger, the series stars Daniel Ezra, Taye Diggs, Samantha Logan, Bre-Z, Greta Onieogou, Monet Mazur, Michael Evans Behling, Cody Christian, and Karimah Westbrook.

Here’s the official description of Season 2: The return of All American finds Spencer James (Daniel Ezra), now a football State Champion, with a tough decision to make. Does he stay in Beverly Hills and play for Coach Billy Baker (Taye Diggs)? Or does he move back home to South L.A., reunite with his mother, Grace (Karimah Westbrook), brother, Dillon (Jalyn Hall), and play for his father, Corey (Chad Coleman)–the new head coach for the South Crenshaw Chargers? This isn’t an easy decision for him to make because it’s not just about football. It’s about choosing between the people he loves. No longer is Beverly Hills just some affluent place that represents his shot out of the hood. Now, he has friends there, including his antagonist turned ally, Asher (Cody Christian), who’s fighting to hold on to his football dreams. He has his girlfriend there, Layla (Greta Onieogou), who’s secretly battling her own demons. And most importantly, he has a second family there in the Bakers–Billy, Laura (Monét Mazur), Jordan (Michael Evans Behling) and Olivia (Samantha Logan)–who are struggling to adapt to the new normal of their broken home. However, when Spencer’s thrown an unexpected curveball, the fallout of his life will end up affecting everyone he holds dear, including his best friend, Coop (Bre-Z), who’s trying to take control of her life by stepping back from gangs and pursuing her musical dreams.
