Ever since high school, I have made it a point to tell the whole world, well at least anyone who would listen, that I would be chucking the deuces to my parents’ house, after I graduated from college.

And, it wasn’t because I disliked being around my family, or that they were super strict. but I was just so eager to orchestrate life under my own terms and roof.

I had this picture in my head of what life would be like after college. You know, a bomb job with lots of exposure, a nice condo in the city, a cute Teacup Yorkie, BAE, and a premium Netflix plan.

But, you know the saying: “If you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans."

For a long time, I would look down on people who were still living with their parents after “X” amount of years because in my mind I associated it with failure and laziness.

Kind of harsh right?

But, after seeing friends, and family members abuse this privilege that formed the basis of my thinking.

Well, that was until I had to move back in with my parents after graduating college because I decided to ditch the 9-5 life and start my own media company. #mymoneywasalittlefunny

I’ve been living at home for a year now, and I can honestly say that it has been the best decision that I’ve made, as it has given me the time and space to develop my company and learn more about myself.

It has also helped me to realize that sometimes you have to take a step backward to move forward, and there is no shame in that!

If you’re struggling with the transition, here are some tips that have helped me to get the most out of my time back at home with my parents, and make plans toward the future:

How to get over the initial embarrassment:

If I'm being real, which I always like to be, then I will say that it is practically inevitable to not feel even a little embarrassed when you have to tell people that you're moving back in. And, really the embarrassment originates from feeling like you've let yourself down, and becoming victim to comparing yourself to your friends. But, you have to quickly get over this feeling as you are doing what you need to do to establish yourself and your future.

Think of it like this, during the time that you're living with your parents you will be able to save money, learn more about yourself and what you want to do with your life, and not be rushed to figure it out because of financial strains.

How to create a partnership with your parents:

When you move back in with your parents, it is important that you establish a new relationship with them. You don't want to be in a situation where they are still treating you like a little kid, so you can't act like one. Think of yourself as their roommate, and not their child. If you're making some money, you should help contribute to the necessities around the house (i.e bills, groceries, etc.), and if you aren't making any money than you should help with cooking and cleaning to ensure that you all are making each other's lives easier.

How to create an organized plan so that you aren't there too long:

I would assume that you are reading this because you only need to live with your parents temporarily. So, to expedite your process you need to create a plan that includes:

-The length of time that you want to stay

-How much do you need to save to move into your own place (at least 6 months worth of rent)

-What you need to be doing every day to reach your goal in a timely manner

-Some options of places that fit your budget.

How to have patience in the process:

My last tip: patience, patience, patience. I know that we would all like for our financial situation to change in our favor over night. But, the reality of the situation is that it probably will not. You have to work hard, have a plan, and enjoy the journey. Remember that we are in this place for a reason, so why not get the most out of it.
