After 2016, I vowed to never again have any faith in this country’s broken democratic voting system – built entirely on white supremacy, violence, suppression and the utter humiliation of black folks. Even still, I stood in line today at my polling place, worked almost entirely by a staff of elder black women – and tears welled up in my eyes. These women, one of them 84, still had enough faith to stand at the poll and educate their community about their power. I look at voting more than anything as a thank you – a loud outcry of praise to my fearless ancestors and elders – the many black women before me who waited hours in line to be turned away, those who cried, bled, resisted and endured so that their sons and daughters could cast their ballot. They did not turn the water hoses or dogs on me in the streets today. I did not have to lock arms and march in my sunday best for solidarity and as a buffer to violence. They did not assess a poll tax today. I walked with my children and let them participate without fear of lynching. Thank God I woke up in my right mind AND healthy.
